Happy Travellers

This page is a collection of feedback from some of the many happy travellers that we have booked holidays for over the past few years.

“My husband and children were so non supportive when I suggested the trip and the ultimate compliment when we arrived home came from my husband:

He said it was the best holiday he had ever been on and suggested maybe we do every year!

Kariega was spectacular. This private reserve is the perfect place to take children. Every game drive brought exciting and fascinating viewing – which for the our teenagers was perfect. In addition we felt perfectly safe to leave them by the pool, let them travel back and forth to the room and allow them some independence. Our guide Xolani was excellent and made each game drive just perfection. The kids witnessed a rhino bullying a lion claiming the water hole to be his turf! They had a rhino walk to a sundowners picnic on another occasion. Walked within 50 yards of giraffe, and viewed elephants frolicking in the rainy watering hole – at close proximity. Every drive a new unique and amazing experience.

Then on to Cape Town. Lawhill was absolutely fantastic! It’s one of those rare moments when you enter your hotel suite and think – holy smokes – this is amazing – far exceeding expectations. Massive flat – very private and safe, gorgeous view of the canal. Waterfront a perfect central and safe, densely populated area to stay. The only constructive criticism would be that they offer a service at booking where you can have the refrigerator stocked and dry goods brought in. I wish we had been aware. We wasted 1/2 a day grocery shopping on the eve of a national holiday which was madness and then having to lug heavy bags a fair distance to the flat. While always an interesting cultural experience to grocery shop in a foreign country – we could have spent our time a bit better.

I can’t recommend James and the Uthando tour enough – just fantastic. Wayne and Take 2 Tours also great and so informative. Just wished we had time to do one of Wayne’s cooking nights – would have loved to do. He successfully got us up Table Mountain – clear skies, no wind and early morning so no queues! Brilliant!  It was nice to be able to hit all the major sights with a private guide and just not worry about logistics and have it all sorted for us plus the running narrative which made everything more interesting and meaningful.

On to Wedgeview – Short but sweet visit. Lovely place – very accommodating hosts. The only complaint is we needed to stay longer! Totally recommend Spier Vineyard Segway tour – for future clients with teens – made the wine tasting more bearable for them!

So all in all just a fantastic time. Can’t thank you enough for your wisdom and guidance – would not have changed a thing – All your suggestions absolutely terrific! Spot on!  Just needed to stay longer! With many many thanks” Ellen December 2016 USA

“Just a quick email to say thank you for firstly organising and recommending the various hotels we stay in on our weeks tour of the Eastern Cape. We had an amazing time and each hotel worked perfectly for our short stay. All very different but perfect for the location.

The links at St Francis was stunning  as was Kariega’s Settlers Drift – what a location!  The staff were amazing and the game drives unreal. The Turbine in Knysna was a great choice for our last night. My son and I were blown away by the beauty and quality of the Garden Route. We will most certainly be going back. Thanks again.” Brian, January 2016, UK

“We had a fantastic holiday. Springbok Lodge in Nambiti Private Game Reserve was really nice. I’d definitely recommend it for a one night stay.

I have a friend who is thinking of travelling to SA so I’ll send your details to her and definitely recommend your services for travel planning! Thanks again for everything!” Karen Jackson, January 2016 Belgium

“Thank you so much for organizing an amazing trip for us! Starting off in Cape Town, we especially remembered the amazing hike up Table Mountain, the skeleton gorge trail. With a peaceful beginning in the Kirstenbosch botanical gardens, it didn’t take long to turn into quite the exercise. The swim in the lake at the top of the trail however was worth the climb. And we’re not even mentioning all the amazing views along the way.

Also, skydiving at Skydive Cape Town is something we will never forget. Being able to see the Table Mountain as well as Robben Island from 9000 ft high is truly spectacular!

We finished with some delicious wine tastings among which Constantia Glen at the base of Table Mountain, and also Stellenbosch wineries such as Ernie Els and Boschendal which are a must-do when visiting the area.

After our relatively active week in Cape Town we much appreciated some peaceful days at Cape St. Francis Resort near Port Elizabeth. The resort offered all the peace and quiet we were looking for, but our rental car wasn’t an unnecessary asset during our time there, allowing us to explore the surroundings.

Rounding off our vacation at the Magnolia Guest House with a visit to Addo Elephant Park and sand sledding in Colchester was a nice end to a perfect holiday.

Thanks again for all your help! We couldn’t have done it any better ourselves!” Floris and Eline, December 2015, Netherlands

“We had the most fabulous time. The standard of accommodation was outstanding, we felt truly spoilt at Botlierskop Game Reserve. Johan, our ranger was brilliant with the children and we saw lots on our private game drive – perfect for them to be able to ask all of their questions. Directions were great. Location great, just fantastic and great level of service from both you and them. Sincere thanks.” Sally , December 2016, UK

“We had a great time at Sibuya, everything was absolutely perfect! Thank you very much!” Julia, December 2016 Germany

“Thank you so much for all your assistance in making our South African trip so memorable – we had a fabulous time. The accommodation  at all the venues was  excellent – the view of Paarl Mountain from Val du Charron was quite breath-taking.

The only upset concerned the internal flight on SAA from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. Not only was the flight 3 hours late, but they also managed to lose our luggage- a stressful day.
Thank you again. Best wishes.” David, December 2015 UK

“We are now returned safe and sound. Thank you for making our trip a memorable one. Thank you also for going through all that trouble with my daughter’s lost toy. My brother in law advises that the 150 courier fee has been reimbursed.

We are incredibly fortunate to have found Epic. Rest assured that we will not hesitate to recommend your services to anyone who wishes to organize a trip through Africa. With regards and a very happy new year.” Felicia, Singapore December 2015

“Thank you for an unforgettable holiday.  You surely have a knack for knowing exactly where I wanted to go, feel comfortable, relax have fun and make memories in the mean time. It was a perfect mix of bush, beach, culture and adventure.

Settlers Drift in Kariega Game Reserve was amazing and definitely the highlight of my trip. It is probably one of the nicest locations I’ve been too. A must see for everyone.

Also Addo Bush Palace, Cape St. Francis and all the other nights were all really different and each in itself a great experience. Really enjoyed the Xhosa survival course, at Addo Bush Palace. I don’t imagine carrying a bucket of water on my head any time soon though I really found it interesting to see how the people lived and still do. Definitely worth going back.

Again thank you sooooo much for everything, everything was so well organized. You are very professional, flexible and make planning a trip an enjoyable breeze. The next time I come to SA I will definitely book my trip through you again.” Greetings Nicole, October 2015, Netherlands

“I’d like to thank you again for organizing what was a GREAT week in Cape Town and the Cape peninsula. Me and my friends enjoyed our week there tremendously. First, the café’s and restaurants in Cape town, our climb unto table mountain and lion’s head (with spectacular views on the city) and the amazing nature which surrounds this exciting city. Next, our second destination took us along impressive cliffs and views on the ocean to Simon’s Town where we went on a whale watching trip (and saw a lot of them!) and also in my view the absolute highlight of our visit: the Cape of Good Hope. To top off our week, from Simon’s town, we went to Stellenbosch wine district, where we tasted a lot of beautiful wines and saw a lot Dutch heritage. Summing it up: an incredible journey in just one week! Lovely nature, exciting city, everything very affordable (I think at most places we paid 50% of what we would pay In Europe), so we could also enjoy going out at night. Thanks again for the quick and super service and for organizing such a great and varied week!

See also some of the picture’s I’ve made along the way!” Hans, Netherlands, October 2015

“First, let me say that we were extremely grateful for the way you helped plan our trip.  Your response time in the planning process was amazing.  We had worked with another agent for a few weeks prior to finding you and had been extremely discouraged.  The way you rescued us when we lost our return flight information was so welcome.  Helping was maybe not so unusual but your manner and attitude was so very special.  Thanks again.  Maybe in the future we won’t be quite so scatter-brained.  Or if we are, hopefully we will have you in our world.  If that world is southern Africa, you definitely will be involved.

The only deficiency I found was that we did not have luggage racks in most places; that required that we live out of our suitcases which had to be on the floor  — or the couch.   Since that was the case everywhere, I’m guessing that is just the custom in South Africa, but luggage racks would have been welcome.  The lack thereof will not stop our going back!

The car was delivered on time at Kariega and was what we needed.  We didn’t kill anybody on the highway, didn’t get yelled at much, and I’ve recovered from the nervous breakdown from driving on the opposite side of the road.  The transfer from our safari to Kariega and from Kariega to being on our own went smoothly and with no glitches.

Mossel Bay Protea is a very nice hotel and could not have been more convenient for shark diving.  Unfortunately for Protea, we stayed there immediately after three days at Kariega.  That’s being a normal guest when you’ve been treated like royalty elsewhere.    It’s nothing against the hotel; they just didn’t have much of a  chance when we had gotten accustomed to the treatment at Kariega.

The shark diving was terrific.  A little cold but that is weather and not in anybody’s control.  We saw several sharks and very close!  Wow.  When a shark hits the cage, you know it’s something rare.  According to the information we were given, the sharks at Mossel Bay are the “juveniles” because the adults usually are at Cape Town.  A 12-14 feet long creature doesn’t seem much like a “juvenile” anything.  I would love to go back and do it again when it’s warmer, although I suspect they might have trouble getting me back on the boat if I wasn’t cold.

Kariega is so very special.  The accommodations are spectacular, the food yummy, and the people so very warm and welcoming.  We even had the resident giraffe in camp while we were there.  The game drives were so much fun and our guide so very knowledgeable.  He found creatures that we would never have seen if he wasn’t so observant.  I have a picture of an owl at dusk that is terrific.

Hog Hollow was a perfect ending.  We were so tired when we got there that all we wanted was to hang out and do almost nothing.  It was perfect for that.  There seemed to be a lot to do if we had wanted, but by that time, we were pretty wiped out.  It’s beautiful and the food and service were quite elegant.

All in all, we had a fabulous time and are ready to go back any day.  Little problem affording it right now, but when we are ready to go to southern Africa, you will be our first call.  Thanks again.” Kevin and Chris,  October 2015, United States

“We had a great trip and found all the accommodation great. The hotel in Joburg was lovely, it was just such a pity we were only there for a night and we were so jetlagged that we went straight to bed when we got there!!!

Cheetah Plains was amazing. A lovely safari experience for us all. The facilities were great and we were right in the middle of it….one evening when we were out on a game drive a leopard strolled thru the camp!!! We could hear lots of animals at night and everyday by the pool we would have visitors to the water hole. The staff too were very welcoming and helpful. And of course the game drives were amazing…

Muizenburg was a great change of scene for us and having the apartment was great as we had more room to spread out and relax. The penthouse was fab with amazing views of the surf and peninsula. We visited  Kalk Bay, Simons Town And Cape Peninsula, and kids enjoyed some surfing! Weather was a bit mixed but a bit of rain doesn’t hurt! A real highlight was lunch at the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay and of course the penguins.

We took your advice on taking the scenic route to Cape Town which was beautiful and really gave us a sense of the area.

Cape Town was a change of pace again being right in the middle of things. It was great to be so central. I loved the Waterfront with all the artists and designers. We were lucky to get to Table Mountain the first day as the clouds and rain rolled in after that and we also went to Robben Island which was really interesting. Table Mountain was fab, a definite must do in Cape Town.

All up we had a great trip and I saw Angie the other day and told her what a great job you did….I will definitely pass on your details to anyone I hear of who is making the trip to SA. Thanks again for all your help!” Tara, October 2015 Australia

“Our trip was awesome, thanks so much for working with us to plan it!  It was a perfect balance of luxurious relaxation and adventure, exactly what we were looking for.  We had great weather, and all of the travel connections went smoothly.

A few comments for you on each of the places –

Leeuwenvoet – Nice accommodations, great breakfast, very helpful in figuring out what to do.  Only issue we had was that a few of the taxi drivers didn’t know where they were located, since they are on a very minor branch of a well-known road.

Berluda farmhouse – We were the only B&B guests, so were given an upgraded room and had a private breakfast each morning – very nice touches.  They seemed apologetic for not having ostrich chicks to see, but we found the farm tour very interesting even without cute animals.  Dinner at Buffelsdrift was the best meal of the trip.

Hog Hollow –  the best service we have ever experienced, and the group dinners were a highlight of our stay. There was less to do in this area (or required more planning and time than we had), so we had some downtime, but otherwise this was a great stop.

Oyster Bay – Another place where we were the only guests.  Very nice property, good service.  Had a wonderful horseback ride, and spend the day wandering the sand dunes.  This was definitely the “relaxing’ part of our trip. Would have liked a bit more variety to the dinners, but otherwise great stay.

Kariega – Wow.  I don’t know if we could have picked a better place for our safari experience.  From a private boat ride entrance to a full day driving the park (with a picnic lunch), we had an amazing time.  Two minor critiques – 1) the dinners were delicious, but could use a little improvement to bring them up to the quality of the rest of the accommodations.  2) They were very receptive to our interests, and it was clear that they took pride in customizing the day’s itinerary to provide the best possible experience for each guest.  However, when it was apparent to the staff that we did not get along well with the other party staying at the lodge, they seemed to be at a loss of how to handle the differences in our personalities other than to apologize at the end of the trip.  I am not sure how often this is an issue, but I think with some creativity our experience could have been improved (separate seating at dinner would have gone a long way…).

As far as your service – the itinerary was very well-thought out, and details about each accommodation were very clear.  There are a few items that it did not occur to me to ask, but in hindsight would have been helpful to have received – 1) More detailed driving directions would have been helpful (GPS signal was spotty), particularly in the area around Cape Town.  2) Guidelines on local customs, particularly on tipping.  We had an old guidebook that had suggestions, but updated advice from a local travel advisor would have been helpful.   3) What to pack – We tried to look up the weather in advance, but had not realized quite how hot some areas would get, given the season.

Thanks again, we would definitely recommend your services to people in the future.” Erin, July 2015 USA

“Our daughters and their families returned safely to the U.S. over the weekend, after a very successful holiday in South Africa.  I’ve attached a few photos to give you an idea.  Two are at Gold Reef City: the kids were impressed to learn that in South Africa, Santa is Black (the girl on the left is the daughter of one of Chris’ childhood friends); the other is after a trip down to the gold mines.  There are three from Kariega: our full family taking a break after a game drive on the Veldt; the boys in the pool; and one from the braai — at the end of the table are Travis (our dedicated game ranger) and Sara (our cook and housekeeper) — they are a couple, and were terrific.  Finally there is a shot from one of the tidal pools at Salt Rock.  We also visited the Zulu Cultural Center on the road to Pietermaritzburg and had several other adventures.  Right now, Chris and I are in JNB with Chris’ close friend from childhood, where we are just relaxing, including visits to the Apartheid Museum and the Cradle of Humankind.

Our trip could not have gone so smoothly nor been as wonderful without your skilled hand guiding and directing us and making all of our arrangements.  Thanks again for all of your help.” Dan and Chris,  January 2015, United States

“Thank you so much for helping us plan our holiday! We had a great time at Kariega. The food, accomodations and game drives were all excellent.

Compared to the space we enjoyed at the chalet at Kariega, the lodgings at Hog Hollow seemed a bit cramped although it was actually still very good.

It was also raining for 2 days when we arrived at Plettenberg Bay so we didn’t get to appreciate the famed Garden Route as much as we would have liked to. But well, the weather is something we can’t control. We did visit Tenikwa though and it was really good of the guide there to bring us on the Kids Challenge despite the rain. Wished we had at least one more day to spend on the way back to Cape Town.

The kids really liked Old Mac Daddy. It was such a unique place and we would definitely recommend it to friends if they are in that part of the world.

South Africa is beautiful. We would love to visit the other parts of the country if the opportunity arises in future.” Jiak Ping, Singapore December 2014

“We just wanted to write and say thank you and Merry Christmas. We love More Quarters and we just came back from a fantastic wine tour with Wayne’s guide Jack.

Thanks again I am sure the wedding day will be great and from the looks of the pictures so will the final few days of our honeymoon.

Thank you again for all of your work helping us plan our dream trip.” Larry and Sabrina,  December 2014, Canada

“First my overall verdict. We  had a great holiday, the weather was not always to our liking, there is room for your improvement.

We were surprised about the fantastic standard of the restaurants in the Cape area and the prices compared to Europe.

Again we had very enjoyable holidays, for me seeing old friends  and I would book my next trip again with EPIC.” KNUT and the rest of the crowd Germany November 2014

“Here only a short answer, I’ll do a longer one soon! We’ll had a really exciting, luxurious and great time in Amakhala, it was worth every Rand. Our Ranger Justin was unbelievable, we saw lot’s of animals, had exciting experiences with an elephant who was running after us… puhhhh…

We had an amazing time in Southafrica and were very happy to meet you and your family! It was great having barbecue with you and we already realized, that we forgot to take a few pictures from this top-event! My kids could have stayed much longer, they had so much fun with your kids and the dogs!

Thanks again for the planing, your patience and just everything you all did for us! Hugs and kisses from Switzerland!” Yvonne, October 2014

“We had a wonderful two weeks. I can give you the girls top three experiences: the world’s longest bungy jump enroute to Woodall, the horse back riding on the beach at Kenton on the Seaside and the lion pride kill the last night at Kariega on the night drive.

Accommodation was great everywhere, girls favourite was Woodall, hope to get back there when it is warmer to enjoy the outdoor showers and plunge pool!  The piano player in the restaurant was a wonderful gentleman.

Food:
Girls best breakfast was More Quarters (they were all good), best dessert was the soufflé in Stellenbosch at Jordan’s, absolute favourite for dinner was Nobu in Cape Town, although we loved all the restaurants in Cape Town.

For the adults…..Jan loved the bed at Wedgeview (extra long kingsize) and the breakfasts.  We loved all the accomodations.  The Giraffe in the backyard drinking from our pool at Kariega made the trip!!  The lodge was authentic, our guide Juan was great.  I liked Ukhozi Lodge as it felt like a lodge and not a hotel, albeit I like all the amenities of five star you still want to feel you are in the real meal deal.  Jan particularly liked the drinks at sunset out on the reserve and the welcome back fire and Amurula!

Everyone loved Fortunate and Beauty, our waitresses at Grootbos.  The whale watching was excellent as the boat and crew were perfect and the whales and sharks cooperated.  The girls marked this their second favourite horseback riding.

Overall a first class trip and last but certainly not least, Jeremy was a big hit, a good sport, knowledgeable and funny with the girls kept them amused.
All the best and thank you!” Michelle, July 2014, Mauritius
